1984: MA in Egyptology, Leiden University, after studies in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Leiden 

1985 - 1987: Research assistant, Theological Faculty, Free University Amsterdam 

1985 - 1990: Teacher of Dutch as a foreign language, James Boswell Institute, Utrecht University 

1990 - present: Lecturer (initially teacher) of Coptic language and literature, Leiden University 

1996: PhD, Leiden University (thesis:  L’image du mal en Égypte: démonologie et cosmogonie d’après les textes gnostiques coptes

1996 - 2000: Congress secretary of the International Association for Coptic Studies; organization  Seventh International Congress of Coptic Studies (Leiden, 27 August-2 September 2000) 

1997 - present: Member of the Polish archaeological mission in Naqlun (Fayoum, Egypt) and various other epigraphic missions in Egypt and Sudan 

2000 - present: Member of the board of the International Association for Coptic Studies (IACS); member of the editorial board of various international journals (i.a.  Vigiliae Christianae, since 2011) 

2008 - present: Extraordinary professor of Egyptology and Coptology, Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies / Institute for Studies, Radboud University Nijmegen 

2008 - present: President-elect of the International Society for Coptic Studies (IACS) 

2009 - present: Member of the board of the Association francophone de coptologie (AFC)
