Hester Groot is a PhD candidate at the Centre for Linguistics. She is a historical sociolinguist, focusing on the language of the poor in Late Modern Scotland. Her research specifically looks at pauper letters, written by the poor to request relief from local authorities across Scotland. As part of this research, she is working on the compilation and digitisation of the Corpus of Scottish Pauper Letters, covering the period of 1750-1910.

Research
