More information about Hanna van Bentum

Hanna van Bentum is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Public Administration. Her research focuses on technocracy and the role of knowledge and expertise in political-administrative practices.

Hanna van Bentum graduated from the University of Humanistic Studies in 2023 with a master's degree in Citizenship, Professionalism and Civic Society. In her master's thesis, she examined technocratic tendencies in the self-perceived legitimacy claims of active citizens. Her doctoral research, which began in 2024, builds on this theme. She investigates how normative views on the relationship between science and democracy influence everyday political and administrative practices. In doing so, she approaches technocracy as an (un)conscious practice of legitimacy. Her research combines theoretical-philosophical and empirical approaches, drawing particularly on critical-interpretative research methods such as ethnography. She teaches the course Philosophy of Science and Foundations of Public Administration.
