David Holmes studied Mathematics at the University of Warwick and Christ’s College, University of Cambridge, and obtained his doctorate at Warwick. He joined the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University as a postdoc in 2012, and has been Professor of Mathematics there since October 2023.

His research lies in arithmetic and algebraic geometry, with particular interests in the geometry of moduli spaces (especially moduli of curves, abelian varieties, and line bundles) and in logarithmic and tropical methods. Much of his recent work concerns models of degenerating families of Jacobians and abelian varieties, and intersection theory on those models. His research is supported by an NWO Vidi grant and an ERC Consolidator Grant.
