Ton (A.J.) Rabelink is professor of Internal Medicine, head of the division of Nephrology, head of the department of Internal Medicine and head of division 2. In addition, he is the figurehead of the route Regenerative Medicine for the Dutch Science Agenda, chair of the Dutch federation of nephrology, and board member of the Bontius and Möller Foundation

Renal diseases
Currently, in his capacity as professor of Internal Medicine in particular renal diseases, he is the programme leader of 4 research programmes within the LUMC. These 4 programmes are related to the divisions part of his department, namely Nephrology, Endocrinology, Geriatrics and gerontology and Thrombosis and haemostasis.
Furthermore, professor Rabelink is (co-) chair of the profile area Vascular and Regenerative Medicine both at LUMC and University Leiden.
Academic career
Ton (A.J.) Rabelink, MD, PhD, is professor of Medicine at the Leiden University Medical Center. He received his MD PhD degree from Utrecht University. The title of his thesis in 1990 read: On the renal response to head-out water immersion. After completing his residency and fellowships in internal medicine and nephrology he joined the faculty of Utrecht Medical School in 1993. Through the Dutch Kidney Foundation he became a professor by special installment in 1998, after which in 2000 he was installed as professor by Utrecht University. Subsequently, he was appointed chairman of medicine in the University Hospital Utrecht from 1999 to 2004.
In 2004 he moved to Leiden University Medical Center and became head of the department of Nephrology and Transplantation and in 2010 chairman of Medicine again.
His main research interest has been in the area of vascular biology and its implications for renal function, and in regenerative therapies for kidney disease and diabetes.
