Conquering the fortress: New strategies for the treatment of tuberculosis

Can we exploit the cell death machinery of the host to develop new host-directed anti-TB treatments?

Description

Drug-resistant tuberculosis is the most lethal airborne disease worldwide. The causative bacteria hide in compact conglomerates of cells (granulomas) that limit the effectiveness of antibiotics and host immune responses. The aim of this project is developing new host-directed therapies able to attack this ‘tuberculosis fortress’ and increase the effectiveness of current anti-tuberculosis therapies or novel phage-based therapies.
