Planetary health is ideally suited to an interdisciplinary approach that integrates medical, social, ecological, societal and policy perspectives. This KIEM project lays the foundations for strengthening and innovating inter- and transdisciplinary educational development in planetary health through a collaboration between the FGGA/Leiden University College (LUC) and the LUMC, and for embedding this within their educational programmes.

Research objective

The project creates a shared space for learning and development in which lecturers from both institutions exchange pedagogical expertise and innovations in inter- and transdisciplinary education, and in which lecturers, together with students, develop new forms of teaching in planetary health that support the integration of medical, social and natural science perspectives into education. The transdisciplinary nature of the project is reinforced by the involvement of social partners and policymakers. The project will also conclude with an agenda for future educational innovations and larger joint grant applications.

Interdisciplinary approach

This project aims to strengthen the understanding and education of planetary health topics at both LUC and LUMC by facilitating learning and integration of more social science perspectives of LUC staff and the (bio)medical and population health science perspectives of LUMC staff. We will do this by building on current interdisciplinary teaching, learning from each other's experiences to promote transdisciplinary learning related to planetary health for all our students.
