The Hague Neighbourhood Monitor

Local authorities face numerous major issues in different neighbourhoods, all requiring different approaches and solutions. With this study, Leiden University aims to gain a better understanding of how residents from every neighbourhood in The Hague think and act on such issues. This insight will help to understand how local policy can be better tailored to the needs, concerns, and behaviours of the population of The Hague.

'The Hague Neighbourhood Monitor' study is funded by the European Union and will be conducted independently in 2026 by researchers from the Leiden Leadership Centre at Leiden University, Campus The Hague.

Responses from participants in the Neighbourhood Monitor help to better understand how the municipal government can involve city residents in major issues. It also provides insight into differences between residents across neighbourhoods in the city and how they experience and deal with issues and policies. This offers opportunities to develop better policies that are more in line with the needs of residents.

The Neighbourhood Monitor survey is conducted among randomly selected households in the 114 neighbourhoods of The Hague. Of all participants in the survey, 20 respondents will have the chance to receive 150 euro. Participants in the survey can read how this works in the questionnaire.

Participation in this questionnaire takes approximately 10 minutes, is entirely voluntary, and involves no risks. The university will treat all responses confidentially. Respondents’ answers to this questionnaire will be used exclusively for scientific purposes. Results in reports will not be traceable to individual participants. Once the research data has been collected, it will be separated from personal information and stored anonymously.

If you are a participant in this research and you provide your contact details when answering the questionnaire, this information will only be used for the prize draw or for feedback about the research (upon request). We will then delete your details. If you do not provide your contact details, your answers will of course also be anonymous and cannot be traced back to you.
