Dr. Maria Tiggelaar is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Public Administration, Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, Leiden University, where she is part of the Public Management and Organisation research group.

Her research examines how bureaucracy can work better for all parties involved. It centres on how citizens and public servants cope with the bureaucratic procedures they encounter, both in their daily work and in their interactions with government services. Her work includes studies on the coping strategies street-level bureaucrats use to manage administrative tasks, the role third-sector organisations play in reducing administrative burden, and why policymakers continue to support such burdens. Through this research, she aims to contribute to accessible and equitable public service delivery.

Maria obtained her PhD in Public Administration from Ghent University (2025). She previously worked as a visiting doctoral student at the Better Government Lab at Georgetown University. Her work has been published in journals including Public Administration Review, Public Administration, and Public Management Review.
