Since late 2012 and early 2013 concerns about what is called ‘jihadism’ or ‘Islamist extremism’ have featured prominently on the national security agendas of the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. These concerns are fuelled primarily by citizens of these countries travelling to or returning from the battlefields in Syria/Iraq, and in particular those citizens joining the so-called Islamic State. This project inventories and monitors what the aforementioned countries are undertaking in terms of laws and policies to address concerns about ‘jihadism’. The aim is to map similarities and differences between the policies of the seven countries, and to place the policy practice of the Netherlands in international comparative perspective. The study is conducted on the basis of publicly available sources.
