Emphasis is placed on two polysaccharides: xylan, a major component of plant cell walls, and sulfoquinovose, a sulfonated sugar derived from plant membranes. By synthesizing tailored chemical inhibitors and probes, this research provides chemical tools for studies of the enzymatic mechanisms and biological roles of glycan degradation pathways. These findings contribute to advancing our understanding of plant biomass conversion and its potential applications in biotechnology, including renewable energy and sustainable material production.
