Call for papers - Common Interests and Common Spaces: Institutional Approaches to Dispute Settlement
The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies welcomes abstracts for a workshop on Common Interests and Common Spaces: Institutional Approaches to Dispute Settlement to be held in The Hague on Wednesday 13 December 2023. This event kicks off a new series of events hosted by the Leiden Forum on the Architecture of International Justice, and will feature a keynote from Professor Malgosia Fitzmaurice (Queen Mary University London).
The workshop will address questions dealing with design and reform of international dispute settlement, with a special focus on the institutional management of community interests and shared resources or areas. The conveners of this workshop are particularly interested in contributions which:
- examine judicial as well as quasi-judicial or non-judicial institutional approaches to the settlement of international disputes involving common or shared interests;
- revisit conceptions of the judicial function of international courts as, on the one hand, facilitators of the peaceful resolution of disputes and, on the other, guardians of justice as a public good;
- critically evaluate formal and informal modes of participation in dispute settlement or compliance proceedings involving public interests, or consider questions of legal standing in this context; and/or
- articulate visions for the future of dispute settlement and institutional supervision regarding common interests or spaces, or frame the values which may underlie the creation or effective use of such institutions.
Participants will present research-in-progress in a roundtable format, with emphasis on feedback and discussion. Participants are therefore expected to circulate a working draft of their paper prior to the event, and may be asked to complete the paper for publication in a peer-reviewed collection. Contributions from early career researchers are most welcome. Subject to internal rules and regulations, a small budget is available to cover the costs of hotel and transportation where applicable.

- 28 September 2023: Deadline to submit abstract
- 6 October 2023: Selected participants informed
- 1 December 2023: Deadline to submit working draft (between 3,000 and 6,000 words)
- 13 December 2023: Workshop convenes in The Hague

Please also clearly indicate 'CfP Institutional Approaches' in the subject of your email. Joint submissions are welcome, although funding is in principle available for only one author per paper.
