Farewell Professor Jan van den Berg (ISGA)

A farewell seminar was held on 22 November 2018 in honour of the departure of Prof. dr. Jan van den Berg, Professor in Cyber Security and Scientific Director of the Cyber Security Academy foundation (CSA).

The central theme was ‘Transdisciplinaire kennisontwikkeling: een ‘must’ voor Cyber Security?’ (Transdisciplinary knowledge development: a must for Cyber Security?). Over a 100 (guest) lecturers, alumni, and students from the master’s programme Cyber Security were present.

Cyber Security Academy

The Cyber Security Academy (CSA) was founded in 2014. A collaboration between TU Delft, University Leiden, and the The Hague University of Applied Sciences on the initiative of the municipality of The Hague.

Over the past few years, CSA has explored the complex dilemma of cyber security and translated it into new training programmes for professionals with the help of numerous partners from both the public domain and private organisations.

Almost five years later, on 22 November, the farewell of CSA pioneer Jan van den Berg was the ideal occasion to take time to reflect and look ahead. How has the CSA collaboration contributed to both education & science, as well as the professional practice? Where did things go well and where is there still a long way to go?

Transdisciplinary knowledge development: a must for Cyber Security?

Professor Bibi van den Berg opened the seminar with an introduction titled ‘Transdisciplinariteit & Cyber Security: modegril of voorwaarde’ (Transdiciplinarity & Cyber Security: fashion fad or provision). She was followed by Marco Romagna (PhD student connected to the The Hague University of Applied Science) who elaborated on his transdisciplinary research on Hacktivism.

After which scientists and professionals in the field of cyber security engaged in a debate with the audience on the added value of the transdisciplinary approach to science and society and its demands on science and professional practice. The debate was supervised by Jacqueline van Zoggel.

In his closing speech titled: ‘Transdisciplinariteit & Cyber Security: verleden, heden en toekomst’ (Transdisciplinarity & Cyber Security: past, present, and future), Jan van den Berg reflected on the turbulent development that cyber security in society and in the scientific world has gone through over the past few years. A development to which CSA, judged by this afternoon, has been a highly esteemed contributor.
