Government Roundtable Discussion on the issue of Radicalization

On the 25th of February, CTC researcher Daan Weggemans participated in a hearing of the permanent commission for social affairs and employment. During the hearing the issue of radicalization was discussed in two sessions. The first session gave members of parliament the opportunity to discuss the manifestations of radicalization in practice with members from the Muslim community. In the second session five academics were ask to present their views on radicalization in the Netherlands.

Among other things Weggemans emphasized that radicalization is a multilayered problem. In relation to the Syrian and Iraqi conflicts all kinds of push and pull factors are at play which limits the possibilities for effective (governmental) interventions. Within this context however, Weggemans stressed that parents of radicalizing/radicalized children should be assisted by a network of (local) professionals.

The public hearing was streamed live via the commissions website.
