Visiting Researcher
The International Institute of Air and Space Law (IIASL) welcomes visiting researchers who would like to spend time with us furthering their (PhD) research. As a visiting researcher, you can make use of our extensive library, our digital resources and the expertise of the Law School’s institutes.
Applications may be submitted by doctoral researchers (at least in the second year of their studies during the proposed stay), postdoctoral researchers, and senior researchers. The research should thematically align with one of the research themes or projects conducted by the academic staff of the IIASL.
The maximum duration of the research visit is six months and takes place, in principle, during the academic year (i.e., September–June).
Application Procedure
Applicants should fill out the online application form which covers, inter alia, the following :
- Motivation (maximum 500 words):
Explain the reasons for conducting a research visit at the IIASL, specify the preferred starting date and duration of the stay, and include the name(s) of the IIASL member(s) with whom you would like to discuss your research during your visit. - Description of intended research (maximum 1,000 words):
Provide a research outline and explain its link to one of the IIASL’s research areas, its connection to the research interests or publications of the IIASL’s academic staff; - Curriculum Vitae (CV):
Include a list of publications; - Letter of recommendation:
Signed by the PhD supervisor, or another academic reference in case of post-doctoral research; - Proof of English proficiency:
If English is not your native language and you do not have a publication record in English, include evidence of your English language proficiency.

Decisions on applications will be made within one month after the application. The decision will be based on the quality of the application and the availability of workspace during the desired period.
Facilities
Visiting researchers will be part of the IIASL’s research community and will have access to:
- IIASL activities, including research meetings and conferences (please note that some meetings are conducted in Dutch and that participation in certain events or conferences may involve additional costs);
- The (digital) library resources of Leiden University;
- A working space, subject to availability (researchers must bring their own laptop);
- Interaction with one or more members of the IIASL through a limited number of meetings;
- Activities organized for Leiden University PhD candidates (applicable to visiting PhD students).
Expectations
Visiting researchers are encouraged to:
- Actively engage in the IIASL’s research activities;
- Deliver a presentation on their research;
- Acknowledge Leiden University in any publications resulting from work conducted during their stay; and
- Include a mention of their research stay on their LinkedIn profile.
Applicants could endeavor to collaborate on a joint publication with member(s) of the IIASL during or after their stay at Leiden University.
PhD students are also encouraged to invite member(s) of the IIASL to join their PhD assessment committee, where possible within the regulations of their home institution.
Important information
Research visits are self-funded. The IIASL does not provide financial support or assistance with housing, if required. Leiden University will assist with visa applications and will pay the fee, which will be invoiced to the visiting researcher.
A fee of 500 Euros per month, with a minimum of 1000 Euros, will be invoiced to the visiting researcher.
