Major study on murder and manslaughter on the Netherlands Antilles
Why are so many people killed on the Caribbean islands? And how can we reduce this number? Scientists aim to find answers to these questions by means of a databank. That could help justice and police on the islands to reduce the number of murders.
'Rough figures show that the number of murders on the islands is ten to twenty times higher than in the Netherlands. In proportion to the population of the islands that is a huge figure,’ says research leader Marieke Liem to the Caribbean Network.
The databank to be set up by Leiden University is for all six Caribbean islands in the Kingdom. It will contain important data on the cases, victims, perpetrators and their earlier criminal history and convictions. ‘The results would help with the tracing and trial of suspects,’ says Liem.
