Initial Teacher Education
Programme for Internationals
Would you like to teach at a secondary school, but don't yet have a teaching qualification and are not yet proficient in Dutch? ICLON Leiden University is developing a special programme for internationals.
Who is it for?
- You have completed a university degree in a school subject, but no teaching qualification (recognised by DUO) for that subject.
- At the start of the programme, you have a job at a secondary school in the Netherlands.
- You have a good command of the English language. This is demonstrated by an appropriate test.
- You are living in the Netherlands and want to learn Dutch.
You must have prior qualifications equivalent to the required Dutch university level. For foreign qualifications, the Admissions Office at Leiden University will carry out a qualification assessment. An assessment by Nuffic is not sufficient.
We are primarily looking for teachers of German, French, Classical Languages, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Please note that this programme for international students does not qualify you for a student visa.
About the programme
This is a full-time programme lasting approximately three years. The course consists of two parts:
- You learn the Dutch language and attend lectures on the language and culture of the school environment.
- You undertake teacher training to qualify as a teacher.
During the course, you work at a secondary school. In the first part of the course, you work as a teaching assistant. In the second part, you work as an independent teacher in your subject area.
We can advise you on your search for a suitable secondary school, but you are responsible for finding a job yourself.
When?
We aim to start in September 2026.
