Children learn their first language remarkably quickly, but the underlying mechanisms are complex. At LUCL we study how infants and young children acquire sounds, words, grammar and meaning, and how perception and production develop together.

Using methods such as eye‑tracking, head‑turn experiments and brain‑imaging techniques suitable for babies, we investigate what children know at different stages of development, how learning unfolds over time, and which mechanisms support language learning across languages.
