About this lecture
In this lecture, we will delve into anthropological research that shifts the traditional ethnographic focus on the 'other' to an examination of Western capitalist societies. Our primary aim is to understand how we label, regulate, and render certain forms of violence invisible. Additionally, we will explore how violence serves as a signal of underlying social structures and processes.
The lecture will address the following topics:
- The moral economy of violence;
- Everyday violence;
- Necropolitics;
- An instrumental perspective on violence; and
- The functional role of daily violence in sustaining systemic reproduction.
