About this lecture

In this lecture, we will explore how institutions shape patterns of violence across societies, including but not limited to homicide. We will examine how social norms, governance, and institutional strength interact with poverty, inequality, and socioeconomic change to influence both lethal and non-lethal forms of violence. Using empirical examples from Latin America, Russia, and organisational contexts, we will discuss how institutional anomie, social solidarity, and organisational structures can help explain variations in violent behaviour, and consider the broader implications for policy, prevention, and the management of violence in different social settings.
