After the second world war, the post-war international order seemed to be moving, with ups and downs, towards greater co-operation, stronger rules-based international order, and deepening economic interdependence. In recent years, however, we experienced a rude awakening and hope of a more stable world order faded. Russia's annexation of Crimea, its invasion of Ukraine, war in the Middle East, strategic rivalry between great powers, and the combined pressures of cyber threats and disruptive technologies have shaken the foundations of our security architecture.
At the same time, the transatlantic relationship with the United States is under strain. Trade flows and tariffs are increasingly wielded as geopolitical weapons, and international norms are losing ground where power politics holds sway. Much of what seemed self-evident for decades no longer is. For the next generation, peace and security will look fundamentally different from what those who grew up in the post-1945 era experienced. That is precisely why it matters so much that this new generation does not merely observe, but actively helps to build the security architecture of tomorrow.
NEXT GEN: The Hague Security Conference brings together experts and emerging thinkers and practitioners. It is a space where experience and innovation reinforce each other, where sharp analysis meets fresh perspectives, and where the agenda for the future is shaped collectively.
On May 27th and 28th 2026, the Atlantic Commission, Leiden University and the Clingendael Institute - with the support of the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence and the municipality of The Hague - will organise the inaugural edition of this conference. In doing so, the Netherlands positions itself as the annual gathering place for fresh thinking on international security.
Anyone who wants to understand the future of peace and security, and help shape it, should be there.
