Description

Several signs suggest that Latin America's political pendulum may have started to swing toward the Right. In early October, the centre-right candidate Rodrigo Paz won the presidential election in Bolivia, marking the end of 20 years of left-wing governance. In Chile, opinion polls indicate that the Right is likely to win the December 2025 election to succeed the current left-wing government of Gabriel Boric. Additionally, both Peru and Brazil have presidential elections scheduled for April and October 2026, respectively. Will rightwing leader Keiko Fujimori win the presidential elections in Peru? In her previous attempts, she narrowly lost by a minimal margin of votes. Will Trump’s strong pressure on Brazilian authorities to release former President Jair Bolsonaro from jail finally succeed? And if so, shall he manage to compete for the presidency in the October 2026 elections?

During this roundtable, four country experts will assess the possible causes and consequences of the current rise of the Right in Bolivia, Chile, Peru, and Brazil. Following the presentations and Q&A, drinks will be served.

Panelists

The four panelists will discuss the following questions in relation to their country of expertise:

  1. How do you assess the importance played by opinion polls during the electoral contests?
  2. What do the elections indicate about the incumbent government's ability to sustain itself over time?
  3. How will the elections and the formation of new governments impact the levels of governability of their country?
