Abstract
This talk revisits ongoing discussions regarding the relevance of Heidegger’s philosophy for intercultural philosophical dialogue, proposing creativity as a vital evaluative criterion for world philosophies. Through an interpretation of Heidegger’s conversation on language between a Japanese and an Inquirer in Unterwegs zur Sprache, I frame Heidegger’s focus on silence as a tertium comparationis to reveal the evaluative dimension embedded in the dialogue. I argue that evaluating Heidegger’s conversation – or any piece of world philosophy – should not rest solely on theoretical correctness. Instead, there are instances where the creative and transformative merits of a philosophical text provide a more meaningful assessment. Ultimately, I conclude that Heidegger encourages us to ask, “What is good philosophy?” – a question that, I contend, will foster greater engagement with and appreciation for world philosophies in the future.
