The Global Futures of the EU
- Date
- Thursday 28 November 2024 - Friday 29 November 2024
- Location
- On Thursday the 28th, the workshop takes place at the Schouwburgstraat 2 in The Hague, room 'Livinglab'. On Friday the 29th it takes place at the Huizinga building (Doelensteeg 16) in Leiden, room 0.06.
Introduction
Taking stock of the way the European Union has been studied and practiced so far, and as a sub-field of international relations, and in the light of increasing contestation of European integration inside and outside the EU, but also rapid transformation due to poly-crises, the return of conventional wars in its neighbourhood, the agility and ability of EU governance to react to the Covid-19 crisis but also the challenges posed by the eurocene or artificial intelligence, this workshop aims to question how should the EU and Europe more broadly be researched, analysed as a discipline and to reflect about the nexus between academia and the practice of European governance. Is Europeanization still a useful concept to approach EU governance? How can the EU still prevail as a beacon of human rights, rule of law when Hungary challenges these norms internally? What is EU’s impact on the global refugee regime in times of rising ethno-nationalism? Can and should the EU be a more inclusive and pluralist actor of international relations? And how to navigate an increasingly transactional geopolitical (dis)order?
This workshop has limited places (up to 25) and we recommend you email o.wijdicks@hum.leidenuniv.nl for registration.
