We are pleased to invite abstracts for a conference on ‘Counterclaims in International Law’ to be held at Leiden University on 27 June 2024, in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London.

This conference aims to explore and engage with the various dimensions of counterclaims in international law. Counterclaims represent a growing phenomenon in international dispute settlement, allowing states and non-state actors to assert their rights, broaden the subject-matter of a dispute or seek accountability for wrongful action in response to claims made against them. Counterclaims are also playing an increasingly important role in shaping the jurisprudence of specific areas of international law, changing the dynamics of dispute settlement processes and influencing outcomes in specific cases, not least in those involving human rights or environmental concerns.
