Course Extremism, Disinformation and Hostile States

Lecturers

The course is taught by experts from Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) from Leiden University, and guest speakers from various countries and universities. They bring academic depth and practical experience from the fields of security policy, counterterrorism, and international relations.

  • Bart Schuurman Professor

    Bart Schuurman is Professor of Terrorism and Political Violence at Leiden University. His research examines terrorism, extremism, and radicalisation, with a strong emphasis on empirical analysis and policy relevance for security professionals and public institutions.

  • Sarah de Lange Professor

    Sarah de Lange is Professor of Dutch Politics at Leiden University. Her work centres on political polarisation, populism, and radical movements, examining how extremist ideas and disinformation affect democratic institutions and political behaviour.

  • Edwin Bakker Hoogleraar

    Edwin Bakker is Professor of Terrorism Studies at Leiden University and Head of Research at the Netherlands Police Academy. His work focuses on radicalisation, terrorism, and counter-terrorism policy, bridging academic research with professional and policy-oriented practice.

    Beatrice de Graaf is Professor of History of International Relations and Global Governance. Her research focuses on security, terrorism, and crisis management, analysing how states respond to threats while upholding democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.

    Isabelle van der Vegt is Assistant Professor of Sociology. Her research focuses on online hate, extremism, and threats to public figures, using computational linguistic methods to analyse large-scale text data.

    Paul Gill is Professor of Security and Crime Science at University College London. His research applies criminological approaches to terrorism, targeted violence, and threat assessment, translating academic insights into evidence-based security policy.

  • Graham Macklin Senior researcher University of Oslo

    Graham Macklin is Senior Researcher at the Centre for Research on Extremism (C-REX). His research focuses on extreme-right and fascist movements, political violence, and terrorism in Europe and North America, with particular attention to accelerationist and nihilistic forms of violence.

  • Jacob Aasland Ravndal Professor Norwegian Police University College

    Jacob Aasland Ravndal is Professor at the Norwegian Police University College and affiliated researcher at the Centre for Research on Extremism (C-REX) at the Oslo University in Norway. His research focuses on terrorism, political violence, and extremism in liberal democracies, with particular expertise in right-wing terrorism and comparative event data.
