Course Extremism, Disinformation and Hostile States

Europe faces rapidly evolving security threats amid growing geopolitical tensions, disinformation, social polarisation and foreign interference. Policymakers and practitioners are challenged to safeguard democratic resilience and public trust as new forms of extremism and terrorism emerge within this complex landscape.

This three-day programme examines how these dynamics intersect to challenge Europe’s stability and resilience. Participants explore the rise of extremism and terrorism, and the spread of disinformation and radicalisation. The course also considers broader political developments that shape the contemporary security environment, including the emergence of populist movements across Europe. In addition, the influence of hostile state actions in an increasingly competitive geopolitical landscape will be discussed.

Through interactive lectures, case-based analysis, and expert sessions, participants learn to identify and interpret complex security dynamics, assess policy and operational responses, and connect academic insight with real-world practice.

Learning takes place in an environment that fosters critical thinking, peer exchange, and direct engagement with policymakers and practitioners. The course combines historical reflection and comparative case studies with practical exercises focused on prevention and resilience.

Participants are introduced to analytical frameworks and methods for threat assessment and crisis management, with particular attention to European approaches to strengthening societal resilience.
