Echo Award
The ECHO Award is an annual award for students with a non-Western background who excel in their studies, leadership, and social engagement.
The ECHO Award, presented by the ECHO Centre for Diversity Policy, recognises socially engaged students from underrepresented backgrounds in Dutch higher education who distinguish themselves through academic excellence, leadership, and above all their commitment to a more equitable society. All nominees join the ECHO Ambassadors Network, a community of around 500 students and professionals built up over some 25 years, and winners are traditionally offered a fully funded summer course at UCLA.
Who is it for?
The award is for students from underrepresented groups who show visible social impact, contribute to policy or systemic change, and demonstrate leadership. Since 2025 there are three awards: one for research universities, one for universities of applied sciences, and a new Current Affairs Award.
Nomination
Students are put forward by their university rather than applying directly themselves. Leiden University nominates students each year, and winners are then selected by an independent jury. The call for nominees is posted each year in April or May. If you would like to be considered, please get in touch with the D&I Expertise Office.
