We are very pleased that Mari Wigham of the Huygens Institute has agreed to speak at our November Connect & session about rich dataset documentation as a way to make datasets easier to (re)use.
Abstract
Make datasets easier to (re)use
How do you decide if a dataset is relevant and usable for your research? How do you find out what information it contains, how it was created, whether it contains errors or biases? Whether you are permitted to use the dataset for the purpose you have in mind, and under what conditions?
Conversely, when a researcher gets in touch with you with questions about the dataset you created (perhaps many years ago), what do you do? Do you have the necessary information at hand, or do you have to rack your brain, dig into email archives, call up colleagues to track down the answers?
This event will explore rich dataset documentation and its potential to help researchers find, understand and reuse datasets. We will present some of the tools and formats currently available and share real-life examples. We will discuss open questions, such as bias and positionality, the barriers researchers face in creating documentation, and the gaps between disciplines. Hearing your thoughts on these topics will help us improve dataset documentation.
This session
This Connect & session takes place online and will last one hour. After the talk there will be time for questions and informal discussion. Everyone interested in thet topic is very welcome to join. This event is part of the “Connect and …” series arranged by, and for, the Leiden University Research Data Management Community, on everything data management-related. The sessions take place every month at different days and times, so as to maximize access according to people’s different working hours, and are normally online.
