Acoustic Recognition of Insects, Despite Missing Frequencies

ABSTRACT:

Audio monitoring is a source of evidence about nature: the sounds of animals can help us to understand their populations, trends, and behaviour. Acoustic recording devices and deep learning have made this possible, notably for birdsong. But insects are a vital layer of our planet's biodiversity. Many insects produce species-specific sounds. Can we use sound to help fill this gap in our knowledge of the planet? I will describe our deep learning for animal sounds, including ongoing work to address the challenging phenomena of insect sounds: data-sparse and often with ultrasonic information missing.
