Tom started his PhD project at the department of Conservation Biology in October 2017. The scope of his project is to assess the behavior and potential effects of various manufactured nanoparticles in aquatic ecosystems.
After having obtained a BSc degree in Biology from Leiden University in 2015, Tom received his MSc degree in Ecology from the VU Amsterdam in 2017. During his studies, Tom specialized in environmental chemistry and toxicology, and developed an eagerness towards understanding the behavior and effects of contaminants in ecosystems.
During his MSc, Tom participated in two major research projects. In the first project, he worked on the development of analytical methods suitable for quantification of biomarkers related to disrupted energy metabolism in zebrafish embryos. In the second project, he assessed the interactive effects of salinization and toxicant stress on aquatic ecosystem structure and functioning in multiple experimental setups.
Tom started his PhD project at the department of Conservation Biology in October 2017. The scope of his project is to assess the behavior and potential effects of various manufactured nanoparticles in aquatic ecosystems, with a strong focus on incorporating realistic exposure settings and relevant ecological complexity. Ultimately, his project will contribute to the development of new/updated long term exposure ecotoxicity bioassays for organisms selected on their representativeness for different trophic levels.
