Nanou van Iersel is a PhD researcher at Erasmus School of Law Rotterdam and eLaw Center for Law and Digital Technologies at Leiden Law School. Her research is on accountability relations in the employment of artificial intelligence (AI) for public safety purposes and takes part in the context of a transdisciplinary research project with four PhD researchers each covering ethical, legal, societal, and technical aspects of AI.

Nanou holds a bachelor’s degree in International Studies (specialization Middle-Eastern studies) with two minors in Criminology and Security Studies from Leiden University and a master’s degree in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society from the University of Twente. During her master’s, she specialized in ethics and technology through an honorary track at 4TU Centre for Ethics and Technology. Besides AI, Nanou has published in the field of migration studies, has taught various bachelor and master courses in sociology of law at Leiden Law School, and has worked on various artistic projects as a form of science communication.
