Marieke Kluin is an Assistant Professor of Criminology at the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology
General
Marieke Kluin is an Assistant Professor of Criminology at the Institute of Criminal Law & Criminology, Leiden University, since 2014. She studied Criminology at Erasmus University Rotterdam, specializing in youth criminology. During her studies, she worked at the District Court of Rotterdam, the Dutch Probation Service in The Hague, and the National Crime Squad of the Dutch National Police. After graduating, she was a researcher at the Safety Science section of Delft University of Technology, where she developed several courses and studied various accidents to implement these in faculty education.
Between 2009 and 2014, she completed her PhD at Delft University of Technology, investigating the relationship between rule violation, compliance, corporate crime and safety in the chemical industry.
Marieke acts as an ad-hoc peer reviewer for national and international journals. She presents her work at international conferences and regularly gives lectures for policy and practice-oriented organizations.
Since September 2024, Marieke has been a board member-at-large of the European Society of Criminology and co-chair of the Green Criminology European Working Group (GREEN).
Research
Marieke’s research focuses on white-collar crime, corporate crime, environmental crime and regulatory enforcement. She combines insights from criminology and corporate crime with particular attention to the role of organizations and regulators in processes of compliance and non-compliance.
Her doctoral research examined regulatory enforcement of Seveso inspectors and was based on a longitudinal analysis of fifteen companies, including interviews, surveys, document analysis, and participation in joint inspections. In 2014, she successfully defended her dissertation Optic Compliance – Enforcement and Compliance in the Dutch Chemical Industry. The study attracted significant media attention, including television, documentary, radio, and national newspapers. During her doctoral research she has written several publications and organized an international congress in 2012 in the field of environmental crime, environmental pollution and victimization.
Currently, Marieke is involved in a research project applying life-course criminology to white-collar crime, with a specific focus on the development of criminal careers in organizational contexts.
Teaching
She obtained the Basic Teaching Qualification in 2012 and Dr. Kluin is currently involved in teaching and coordination of various courses (Leiden Law School) at the undergraduate and the graduate level. She also supervises students in writing Bachelor’s and Master’s theses. She has been a (guest) lecturer in other courses at TU Delft University, Erasmus Rotterdam University and VU University Amsterdam. She is the master’s coordinator of the Master’s programme Criminology and Security Policy and teaches the courses Enforcement Strategies and Organizations in Law Enforcement.
