Maaike Lycklama has been an Assistant Professor in Finance & Accountancy at the Department of Company Law (Institute of Private Law) since September 2012. Before then (from September 2000), she worked as an Assistant Professor in Business Studies.

Education and biography

Maaike Lycklama studied Financial Economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and obtained her master's degree in 1994. During her studies, she was an assistant in VU's Finance department. In 1994, she joined investment bank MeesPierson as an Assistant Researcher in the Equity Research department. She combined this role with her lecturer position at VU. From 1995 to 2000, she worked as an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University. Here, she obtained a designation in lecturing. In 2000, Dr Lycklama started working for Leiden University's Centre for Business Studies.

Dr Lycklama was involved in developing, disseminating and lecturing in courses in Business Studies across the university. Here, she was awarded her PhD in May 2010 having defended her thesis entitled ‘Goodwill and value creation of acquisitions’. Her research was about gaining an insight into the information content of purchased goodwill in relation to the value creation of the acquisition for the business combination. Her research focused on mergers and acquisitions between US publicly quoted companies, to which US GAAP apply. Several key changes that took place in the accounting regime gave rise to the research. In 2011, Maaike Lycklama was appointed as Interim Head of the Department of Business Studies. As of September 2012, she moved from the department of Business Studies to the department of Business Law. In 2012-2013, Maaike Lycklama joined the Utrecht University's Educational Leadership Programme. 

Research interests 

Maaike Lycklama's research interests include mergers and acquisitions, business valuation, soft controls and alternative finance.


Maaike Lycklama is associated with the following courses within the Institute of Private law: Introduction to International Business Law (bachelor's), Company Law (master's) and Finance for Lawyers (postgraduate programme). She is also the Co-Coordinator for International Business Law (bachelor's). 

Other activities

Since September 2012, Maaike Lycklama has been a Professor of Applied Studies in Finance & Business Innovation at the Rotterdam University of Applied Studies (Hogeschool Rotterdam). She is Head of the Course Committee for Corporate Finance in the bachelor's Accountancy programme at Nyenrode Business University. She is also a member of the Supervisory Board of Rabobank Leiden-Katwijk.
