Research on study skills

Van Ketel develops field experiments in teaching at the Faculty of Law. Study skills are the main topic in these. A major project is the development and evaluation of modules that increase opportunities for first-generation students.

In his research, he likes to focus on the direct relevance of research for (educational) practice. As a teacher and musician, he is inspired to do so by needs from the practical field, and as a psychologist he is convinced of the advantages of a scientific approach.

Teaching

Besides his PhD, Van Ketel also teaches statistics at the Institute of Psychology and supervises master's theses at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

He is or has been involved as a teacher or assistant coordinator in the following courses:

  • Introduction to Methods and Statistics
  • Inferential Statistics
  • Experimental and Correlational Research
  • Music Cognition
  • Psychometrics
  • Multivariate Data Analysis
  • Determinants of Human Behavior (part of BA Urban Studies in The Hague)
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Social and Organizational Psychology
  • Personality, Clinical and Health Psychology
  • Bio- and Neuropsychology
  • Academic Skills Tutorship
  • Perspective on Career Planning

Short CV

Before his current positions, Van Ketel worked as a lecturer for several subjects in the Bachelor of Psychology at Leiden University. At this university, he pursued a Bachelor's degree in Psychology (Cum Laude) and a Master's degree in Cognitive Psychology, which he completed Summa Cum Laude in 2017. His bachelor thesis concerned laparoscopic surgery training at LUMC.

Van Ketel's master's thesis focused on study behaviour in relation to study performance of students at the Royal Conservatoire. A trombonist, he then also completed the Bachelor of Music there in 2020. Besides freelance performances, he forms an active duo with organist Iddo van der Giessen.
