Jeroen ten Voorde is Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at Leiden University and Academic Director of the Institute of Criminal Law & Criminology.

Jeroen ten Voorde is professor in criminal law and criminal procedure. He has been working at Leiden University since 2005. From 2014 to 2021, he was also an endowed professor of philosophy of criminal law (Leo Polak Chair) at the University of Groningen.

As a research fellow, Jeroen ten Voorde conducts research within the research programme ‘Criminal Justice: Socially Effective Criminal Justice 2023-2029’. He is also involved in the university’s profile theme ‘Trust in Times of Polarisation’. In his research, he focuses primarily on issues within substantive criminal law and the philosophy of criminal law. He has a particular interest in a number of areas: sexual offences, the criminal law protection of democracy and the rule of law, and criteria for criminalisation (with a particular focus on legal interests).

Together with others, he supervises various PhD candidates (both internal and external) in the writing of their theses.

Teaching

Jeroen ten Voorde teaches on the Bachelor’s programme in Law and on the specialisation in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure within the Master’s programme in Law. He frequently delivers guest lectures and postgraduate courses.

Ancillary activities

He combines his work at the university with various additional activities. He is chairman of the A.E.J. Modderman Foundation and a member of the board of the Dutch Lawyers’ Association. He is also a deputy judge at The Hague Court of Appeal and contributes as an author to various editions of Tekst & Commentaar. He is also a member of the editorial board of PROCES.
