Irina Morozova is management/office assistant and PhD candidate at the Centre for Linguistics. In her role as a management/office assistant, she supports LUCL members in everyday practical matters and is also actively involved in internal and external communication of the institute. As a PhD candidate, Irina is investigating the (morpho-)syntax of the expressions of otherness cross-linguistically. Her research interests include (morpho-)syntax of numerals, quantifiers, classifiers and modifiers from comparative perspective.

Research

I am primarily interested in the (morpho-)syntax of the noun phrase. Within my PhD project, titled The Syntax of Being Different: How Human Language Expresses Otherness I am investigating cross-linguistic expression of otherness from the point of view of comparative generative syntax. As a syntactician with (some) background in literary studies and cognitive research, I find disentangling the relations of otherness (and sameness) promising for linguistic theory and beyond. For me understanding linguistic structure means getting one step closer to undertanding human cognition. I am fascinated by language as a cognitive system and excited to investigate the underlying principles of it, and the relation of otherness is certainly one of such principles.

My recent research focused on the role functional mediating elements (or classifiers) play in quantification (see recent publications) and modification (see my ResMA thesis and follow-up work), based primarily on non-classifier languages (such as Dutch or Russian). I have also been involved in the pionnering project investigating the use of VR for the linguistic data collection and am currently part of the project that investigates the use of determiners by the L2 speakers whose L1 does not have determiners with the help of computational methods, such as traditional NLP-methods and Large Language Models.
