Hendrik (dr. H.J.R.) Kaptein studied (legal) philosophy at the University of Amsterdam, earning his doctorate with a dissertation on structures and justification of normative argumentation and ethics. Till 2006 he taught at Nijmegen University and the University of Amsterdam. His special fields of interest and expertise are: legal ethics, theory of criminal law and criminal procedure, and (legal) argumentation. He was president and member of university boards, and is active as treasurer / board member for non-profit organizations. Also he is bell-master of the Old Church in Amsterdam.
