Girija Joshi is a postdoc researcher at the Institute for History, currently working at Centre d’Études de l’Inde et de l’Asie du Sud (France) with an NWO Rubicon Grant.
Research
My doctoral research seeks to understand the relationship between patterns of mobility and migration on the one hand, and community and identity-formation on the other. Specifically, my dissertation focuses upon the 'peasantization' of the Indo-Gangetic divide ('the Delhi frontier'). This region, one of the sites in South Asia where the settled world of the cultivator and the mobile world of the pastoralist had historically met and merged, was increasingly brought under the plough in the nineteenth century, while its pastoral communities were correspondingly marginalized. In my dissertation, I attempt to understand what the social and cultural repercussions of this agrarian colonization were.
