Dr Gavin Robinson PhD LLM is Assistant Professor in Criminal Law and Digital Technologies at eLaw – Center for Law and Digital Technologies at Leiden University. He does research on digital crime (especially economic, financial and AI-facilitated crimes), transnational (cyber-) investigation, comparative criminal procedure, police, judicial and public-private cooperation, data protection law and criminal online content.

Dr Gavin Robinson PhD LLM is Assistant Professor in Criminal Law and Digital Technologies at eLaw – Center for Law and Digital Technologies at Leiden University. He does research on digital crime (especially economic, financial and AI-facilitated crimes), transnational (cyber-) investigation, comparative criminal procedure, police, judicial and public-private cooperation, data protection law and criminal online content.
Gavin has contributed as co-coordinator, expert or national reporter to international, multidisciplinary research projects run from the Netherlands (funded by the European Commission and NWO), Luxembourg (FNR), Belgium (F.R.S.-FNRS and ULiège), Italy (European Commission, FP7) and the United Kingdom (EPSRC), as well as for the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.
Gavin has presented collective and individual research at events in Australia, China, India, Singapore, Latin America and at conferences throughout Europe. He has co-edited two volumes – one on legal innovation, and one on conflicts of jurisdiction in EU criminal law – and regularly publishes in scientific and professional outlets on the tensions between data- and AI-driven law enforcement and the rights to a fair trial, to private life, to data protection, and to freedom of expression online.
At eLaw, Gavin coordinates the Master Thesis programme for the Advanced LLM in Law and Digital Technologies (LDT). He lectures on the Cybercrime & Cybersecurity course within LDT, the Digital Finance course for the Advanced LLM in International Financial Law (topic: Cryptocrime), and the Minor in Privacy and Data Protection (topic: The Law Enforcement Directive).
Gavin also contributes to the pioneering Cybersecurity & Cybercrime BSc, launched in 2025-26 and based at Leiden University’s Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (FGGA) in The Hague, inter alia with lectures on Recht in Cyberspace and within Integrated Project 1: Online Deception and Disinformation.
In October 2025, Gavin co-chaired Privacy Law Scholars Conference Europe (PLSC-E) 2025 at Leiden Law School. This year, he is Programme Director and host of the week-long eLaw Summer School 2026: The EU Digital Omnibus – Streamlining Rules, Sacrificing Standards? running 22 to 26 June in historic Leiden.
