Fien Steenbergen is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University. She works on the NWO VIDI-funded project ‘The Future of Dying: End-of-Life Care in a Time of De-medicalized Death’. Her research explores how healthcare professionals navigate differing understandings of ‘good death’ in situations of advanced, incurable illness.
Fien Steenbergen is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University. Her research explores how healthcare professionals navigate differing understandings of ‘good death’ in situations of advanced, incurable illness.
Fien completed her Msc in Medical Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Amsterdam in 2025 with her thesis titled “‘U vraagt, wij draaien’? Navigating Dependencies and Strategic Communication in Euthanasia Wishes and Requests”. Before that, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Amsterdam University College in 2022, where she majored in Humanities and minored in Social Sciences.
