Emma Schell is conducting her doctoral research on the distributional effects of climate policy with the question of the effects of climate legislation on both vertical and horizontal equity and how these effects affect societal support for climate legislation.

She completed a bachelor's degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at VU University. She then pursued both a Masters in Political Science at the University of Amsterdam with a specialization in European Politics and External Relations and a Masters in Economics with a specialization in Environmental Economics. Her master's thesis in Political Science examined governing the negative environmental impacts of the global fast-fashion industry. Her master's thesis in Economics examined international attitudes toward global climate policy, focusing on policymakers in the EU, Germany, France and Spain. The study examined the viability and support for a global carbon price that funds a global basic income.
