In September 2020, Chrisje started her PhD research on global citizenship at Leiden University’s Leiden Law School (supervised by Professor Ton Liefaard) and the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (supervised by Professor Judi Mesman). Her research is funded by the National Commission for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development (NCDO).

In 2017, Chrisje graduated from the Advanced LL.M. in European and International Human Rights Law at Leiden University. She then took up a position as a Junior Researcher at Leiden Law School. Before obtaining her Advanced LL.M. degree, she worked for in New York two years, as a pro bono legal volunteer at Sanctuary for Families, a non-profit organisation serving the needs of victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. Before moving to New York, she was admitted to the Dutch bar as an attorney and worked at private law firms in the Netherlands for five years, where she specialised in labour law and corporate law. In 2009, she obtained a master's degree in Dutch Private Law at the University of Amsterdam.
