Carien Creutzberg is Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Department of Radiation Oncology at Leiden University Medical Center. Her clinical, scientific and educational activities are mainly focused on improving treatment and outcome for women with gynaecological cancers. She holds several national and international scientific positions, such as member of the Advisory Board of the Dutch Cancer Society, founding member of the Dutch Gynaecological Oncology Group and senior editor of the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer.

Radiation Oncology

The treatment of women with gynaecological cancer often includes a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. Such treatment can have a profound impact on the subsequent life of survivors of gynaecological cancers, such as endometrial cancer and cervical cancer. Carien Creutzberg has conducted clinical research to improve the treatment of gynaecological cancers, reduce side effects, improve quality of life and understand the origin and individual properties of these cancers for over 25 years. She has been initiator and chief investigator of the four successive national and international PORTEC-trials on treatment of endometrial cancer, which have had impact on treatment guidelines worldwide. Resulting from these clinical studies, translational research projects have evolved in close collaboration with Prof Vincent Smit and dr Tjalling Bosse of the Department of Pathology.  In national and international (TransPORTEC) collaborations joint research on molecular-genetic properties of endometrial cancer and their consequences for treatment is being conducted, to better predict the behaviour and prognosis of individual cancers, to enhance individually tailored treatment and reducing overtreatment. In addition, research into sexual rehabilitation after radiotherapy for gynaecological cancers and nurse-led coaching interventions to better help women recover after treatment is done in collaboration with dr Ter Kuile of the department of Gynaecology/Sexology. Creutzberg is the supervisor and co-supervisor of several PhD fellows at the departments of Radiotherapy, Pathology and Sexology.

Carien Creutzberg has published more than 110 articles in scientific journals and 10 chapters in textbooks. She is member of the Dutch Cancer Society Advisory Board, member of the Concilium of the Dutch Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology, founding board member of the Dutch Gynaecologic Oncology Group, co-chair of the GCIG Endometrial Cancer Committee, member of the Scientific Committee for the 2018 IGCS Congress, ESMO Faculty Member for Gynaecological Cancer, and senior editor of International Journal of Gynecological Cancer. She has been Council member of the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology until November 2017, chair of the ESGO Scientific Committee and co-chair of the ESMO-ESGO-ESTRO consensus meeting on Endometrial Cancer. In the past has Creutzberg also been Council member of the International Gynecological Cancer Society, chair of the Scientific Committee of the Dutch Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology and member of the NCI Uterine Corpus Cancer Task Force. She has been invited speaker at numerous national and international scientific meetings on Gynaecologic Oncology, Clinical Oncology and Radiation Oncology.

Academic career

Carien Creutzberg attended Medical School at Leiden University and graduated with honours in 1987. She specialised in Radiation Oncology at Erasmus University Cancer Center Rotterdam, where she completed clinical training in 1993, was appointed as consultant in Radiation Oncology from 1993 onwards, and defended her PhD thesis “Treatment verification in Radiation Oncology – Portal imaging in clinical practice” in 1998.

Carien Creutzberg was appointed as consultant and clinical researcher at the Department of Radiation Oncology at Leiden University Medical Centre in 2000, where she became full professor in 2012. The title of her inaugural speech was ‘Over leven, lijden en leiden’ (On life, suffering and leading)

Prizes and honourable appointments

Carien Creutzberg has been awarded Dutch Cancer Society Grants for all of the PORTEC trials, and related translational research projects and patient rehabilitation projects. Together with UK and Australian colleagues she has received grants from Cancer Research UK and the Australian National Health Medical Research Council for their participation in the PORTEC-3 trial and Radiotherapy Quality Assurance and improvement studies (TROG).

In 1999 she was recipient of the IGCS Award for the best oral presentation.
