Anneleen van der Meer is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs and Programme Director of the BSc Security Studies. Her research examines chemical weapons and the strategic and international consequences of norm transgression, with particular attention to how the use of unconventional weapons reshapes alliances, deterrence postures, and the credibility of disarmament regimes.
She holds an MLitt and PhD in Strategic Studies from the University of St Andrews, where she examined the use of chemical weapons during the twentieth century and the impact of their use on international relations. Before joining ISGA she was a temporary lecturer at the University of Southern Denmark.
Her current work focuses on chemical-weapons use in the Russia–Ukraine war, the politics of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and the durability of WMD norms in an era of contested rules. She writes for The Conversation and other public-facing outlets, and contributes across ISGA's bachelor's and master's programmes in security studies.
