Science often finds itself at the crosshairs of critique, especially in circumstances of high uncertainty. Anestis studies how such critical participation bears on scientific knowledge production in agricultural and environmental controversies. He focuses on the Dutch nitrogen controversy to understand how farmers and other social groups 'overflow' the official framings and knowledge of incumbent actors and prompt science to justify their claims about the world. How does science figure in this new landscape of democratic concerns, and in these new arrangements of knowledge production? What are epistemic consequences for scientists producing knowledge in / on contested issues? These are questions that he addresses in his PhD project.
Anestis has a background in techno-anthropology and science and technology studies. Prior, he worked on EU-funded projects on responsible research and innovation and open science. Former attached to questions around technoscientific governance, latter to questions of affordances of digital research information systems to monitor and evaluate transdisciplinary research in universities. During these projects, he was affiliated to the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University and the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University.
