Children’s Rights Scholarship 2
The Children’s Rights Scholarship 2 is intended for students who wish to follow the Master of Laws Advanced Studies programme in International Children’s Rights and meet all criteria for admission.

For who
Students who wish to follow, and meet the admission criteria for, the Master of Laws: Advanced Studies programme in International Children’s Rights.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for this scholarship you must:
- be a national of Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda or Malawi;
- demonstrate that you do not have sufficient financial means to follow the study programme without scholarship support;
- be highly motivated to follow the Master of Laws Advanced Studies Programme in International Children’s Rights.
Obligations
You must have the firm intention of returning to your home country after graduation and bringing into practice the knowledge obtained during the programme, in order to improve the implementation of international children’s rights in your home country.
Exclusions
You cannot be awarded a Children’s Rights Scholarship 2 if:
- you will follow a study programme other than the Master of Laws Advanced Studies programme in International Children’s Rights at Leiden University.
Scholarship amount
The scholarship amounts to €50,543. The scholarship covers the full costs of participation (tuition, travel, living expenses and accommodation costs). However, it cannot be used to cover the application fee or English test costs. The duration of the scholarship is one year.
Application process
Important note: when applying, you must submit two motivation letters, i.e. a programme motivation letter and a scholarship motivation letter. These must be submitted as two seperate documents and cannot be combined.
- Submit an online application for admission to the Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in International Children’s Rights and pay the application fee of € 100. It is not possible to waive this fee. Make sure to include both the following in your application:
- A programme motivation letter explaining your academic background, your reasons for wishing to follow the study programme, and your future goals.
- A sufficient English language test. Please check the English language requirements. The costs for an English test must be paid by the applicant. For detailed information on English tests, including exemption criteria and methods of submission, refer to the English language proficiency information sheet.
- Draw up a seperate scholarship motivation letter for the Children’s Rights Scholarship 2 (this is in addition to your programme motivation letter). Your letter must meet all the following criteria:
- It clearly states your full name and student number (from uSis) and that the letter concerns your motivation for the Children’s Rights Scholarship 2;
- It describes your financial situation and why you are unable to follow the programme without a scholarship;
- It explains why you are applying for this scholarship.
- After submitting your online application, send an e-mail indicating your interest in this scholarship to the programme coordinator via ICRscholarships@law.leidenuniv.nl. Attach the following two items to your email:
- Your scholarship motivation letter;
- A short video of 2 minutes in which you introduce yourself.
Note that your scholarship application will only be processed after you have submitted your application for admission to the programme via Leiden University’s online application portal (uSis), and have sent an email indicating your interest via ICRscholarships@law.leidenuniv.nl, and have paid the application fee.
Selection process
Candidates for the scholarship are selected by the Admission Board of the programme. Scholarship decisions will be announced in the first week of May 2027.
Finding housing
Be aware that finding housing in Leiden, The Hague and the surrounding area can be challenging due to the limited availability of affordable student accommodation.
