Our research and teaching
Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents opportunities for society and the economy but poses ethical and societal challenges. It seems neutral but relies on human choices such as what data and software architecture is used. These choices affect how AI recognises and interprets patterns, and can impact creativity, productivity and policy, for instance in healthcare. At Leiden University we combine technological progress with a deep understanding of AI’s effect on society to develop honest, transparent and responsible AI systems.
Leiden sets itself apart with fundamental and applied AI research focusing on:
-
machine learning for pattern recognition and data-based predictions
-
language models for advanced communication and textual understanding
-
algorithms for reliable insights into complex and incomplete data
-
ethical and explainable AI for fair and transparent AI decision-making.
Our applied AI research addresses areas of society such as culture, politics, healthcare, public administration and the justice system. We also integrate AI in almost all of the university’s disciplines, developing innovative applications for research and teaching throughout the university.
Leiden University has a strong interdisciplinary AI network with researchers in law, ethics, medicine, computer science, and the life and social sciences. Working with public and private partners – including judges, museums and government bodies – we analyse and influence the impact of AI on society. These collaborations help us create smarter, responsible and future-proof AI.
