The conference will bring together scholars from a wide range of disciplines and institutions to explore how the European Union responds to overlapping economic, social, legal, geopolitical, health and environmental crises. Organised within the framework of the newly established Europe Hub, the initiative aims to strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation on European and EU studies while fostering dialogue between researchers, policymakers and practitioners. Four key themes structure the conference programme: Europe in the world, markets, trade and digitalisation, energy, environment and health, and the foundations of European integration. By examining these themes through multiple disciplinary lenses, participants will develop a deeper understanding of how crises shape EU governance, policy development and public legitimacy. The conference will also help establish a lasting national network for EU studies and will culminate in an edited academic volume bringing together the project’s main findings and contributions.

Aim of the project

The project aims to advance interdisciplinary research on the European Union, foster new collaborations within and beyond Leiden University, establish a national EU studies network and strengthen links between academic research and policymaking in Brussels. 

Interdisciplinary approach

The project brings together scholars from social sciences, law, humanities and governance studies. By combining these perspectives, it examines how crises affect European institutions, policymaking, societal developments and international relations. The conference provides a platform for interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration on complex challenges that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries.
