Research project
Development of a European Higher Education Sector Observatory
This project aims to develop the European Higher Education Sector Observatory (EHESO), a platform that brings together data from major European higher education initiatives to provide comparable insights into higher education systems and institutions across Europe. EHESO supports analysis, benchmarking, and informed decision-making for policymakers, researchers, institutions, and students.

The European Higher Education Sector Observatory (EHESO) is a platform that brings together data and information on higher education systems and institutions across Europe. By integrating multiple European data sources, EHESO supports insight into the performance, organisation, and activities of the higher education sector. The observatory enables policymakers, researchers, higher education institutions, students, and other stakeholders to compare and analyse higher education institutions across a wide range of themes. For example, teaching and learning, research performance, internationalisation, graduate outcomes, and collaboration industry. EHESO provides reliable and comparable information that can be used for benchmarking, and monitoring trends. It also helps students and prospective students make informed choices about opportunities across Europe. The platform has been built on and connects existing European higher education data infrastructures and initiatives, including ETER, U-Multirank, Erasmus+, DEQAR, EUROSTUDENT, EUROGRADUATE, Eurydice, and Eurostat.
In this project, CWTS will calculate and deliver a range of bibliometric indicators based on our in-house enhanced version of OpenAlex at the level of countries and higher education institutions. Special attention will be paid to providing indicators for regional collaboration and Green Research.
